Curriculum

The Dalton Museum Program provides images, artifacts, and expertise to the K-12 community. In addition to developing customized programs in classroom and museum settings, the art historian provides curriculum and professional development. She works together with classroom teachers, experts, and consultants to enhance Dalton's visual and scientific literacy. The coordinator schedules class trips to museums and provides comprehensive information about current and forthcoming exhibitions in the New York area.

The program depends on a wide range of resources:

  • formal, long-term relationships with local cultural institutions, especially The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The American Museum of Natural History, and The Pierpont Morgan Library, which provide Dalton with special access to their exhibits and collections;
  • an in-house database of digital images of art and artifacts;
  • an extensive in-house teaching collection for hands-on learning (ethnographic materials, seal impressions, natural resources, and museum replicas).
  • web resources and educator guides on ongoing museum exhibitions related specifically related to our curriculum

In addition, The Dalton School Libraries offer a unique, hands-on museum program curriculum currently staffed by an art historian. This expert works collaboratively with classroom teachers to design and implement learning experiences that enhance the school's curriculum. The specialist also schedules trips to a several museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History, and frequently schedules outside guests to share their expertise with our community. The museum program truly enables our students and faculty to experience New York City as a classroom.

Dr. Michelle Marcus, Resident Art-Historian and Museum Liaison, and Kris Santos, Museum Program Coordinator, currently staff the Dalton Museum Program.
